Japan is taking another look at how loanwords are written

A September meeting notice put Japanese loanword spelling on the agenda; it did not announce a new rule.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs scheduled an online loanword committee meeting for 18 September 2026. That date has passed. The notice alone does not establish the meeting outcome.

Loanwords, or 外来語, are commonly written in katakana. コンビニ and スマホ are familiar examples.

This is a report about an announcement, not evidence that spelling rules changed. A later decision would need its own source check.

Learning goal

Identify the main idea, retrieve a source-supported detail and distinguish an announcement from a confirmed change.

Discuss

  • Why can an announcement be news even before a final decision is made?
  • Which Japanese word from this story would be most useful in another subject?

Write

Write a three-sentence news brief: state what happened, name the source and explain what is not yet known.

Read Japanese and save words · Signed-in practice; draft passages are labelled.
